Sports injuries and shoulder conditions
Treatment depends on the injury, your symptoms and the activities you want to return to. Many of these start with physiotherapy. Some need surgery.
| Condition | Common symptoms | Treatment options |
|---|---|---|
| ACL tear | A pop at injury, swelling, the knee giving way | Rehabilitation or ligament reconstruction |
| Meniscus tear | Pain along the joint line, catching or locking | Rehabilitation, or arthroscopic repair or trimming |
| Frozen shoulder | Pain, then stiffness in all directions | Physiotherapy, medicines, injection, and release in selected cases |
| Rotator cuff tear | Pain lifting the arm, night pain, weakness | Physiotherapy, injection, or arthroscopic repair |
The risks of keyhole surgery
Risks include infection, blood clots, stiffness, nerve injury and continued symptoms. A repair can fail or the injury can recur. Your own risk should be discussed before you decide.
See a doctor promptly if the knee locks and cannot straighten, or if you cannot bear weight after an injury.
